Revisiting Ballet’s Most Timeless Tales with Ballet Manila

Four of your most beloved ballets take front and center stage for the 21st season of the country’s premier ballet company

The country’s premier ballet company, Ballet Manila, is opening its 21st season this August 2016 by paying homage to some of the acts that have laid down the foundation of every other ballet production and have remained in the hearts and minds of audiences across the world for generations.

Ballet Manila is founded in 1995 by Prima Ballerina Lisa Macuja-Elizalde and Osias Barroso, Ballet Manila is the country’s premier classical dance company. With the mission of connecting both ballet and the people, the company, which puts education at the forefront of its priorities, is well-known as the only Philippine dance company to adopt and strictly adhere to the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet style of dancing, which is well-regarded the world over as the most disciplined and technically-superior style. The company currently has 65 artists under its wing, all of whom have been trained in the Vaganova Academy style of dancing. The company boasts of a solid repertoire that consists of some of the most technically challenging and timeless ballet favorites.

Aptly named Revenge of the Classics, the new season will feature three classics and one contemporary piece that has won the hearts of many Filipinos.
“Nothing beats the classics. There’s something about classical tales and pieces that is just so magical that they stay in your memory forever,” shares Prima Ballerina and Ballet Manila’s Artistic Director and CEO, Lisa Macuja-Elizalde. “Technically speaking, you can’t cheat when you’re doing the classics; there’s just no way. Revenge of the Classics invokes the same spirit that guided us when we founded the company in 1995. My Russian mentor, Tatiana Udalenkova, often reminded me that every season should have a classical production because it is in doing the classics that the company becomes strong. Our 21st season will showcase the power and grace that enable our ballerinas and danseurs to perform these extremely difficult classical ballet roles.”

Rebel: EDSA 30

Revenge of the Classics opens this August 19 with Rebel: EDSA 30. Choreographed by British choreographer Martin Lawrance and featuring music from Spartacus by world-renowned Armenian composer, Aram Khachaturian, this modern classic gained much traction when it debuted in February because of its historical relevance and its touching combination of nationalistic music and strong choreography. Similar to when it was last staged, this season’s production of Rebel: EDSA 30 will feature Joanna Ampil as the voice of Inang Bayan, and performances by the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Gerard Salonga. Rebel: EDSA 30 will be shown at the Aliw Theater on the following dates and time: August 19, 20, and 27 at 8:00 p.m. and August 21 and 28 at 3:00 p.m.

The Swan, The Fairy and The Princess

In October, the dance company will stage The Swan, The Fairy and The Princess, a production that showcases excerpts from three of the most celebrated works of master composer Peter Tschaikovsky, who has written some of the world’s most memorable and timeless ballet scores—Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and The Sleeping Beauty. Scores for this ballet will be performed by no less than the Manila Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Alexander Vikulov. Featuring performances by Kremlin Ballet Theater’s premier danseur, Mikhail Martynyuk, and Miguel Faustmann, who will assume the role of Peter Tchaikovsky, The Swan, The Fairy and The Princess promises a magical experience unlike any other. Show schedules are: October 14 & 15 at 8:00 p.m. and October 16 at 3:00 p.m.

Cinderella

Another timeless tale and arguably one of the most loved stories of all time, Cinderella, starts its run on November 25. This enduring classic sets the stage for the world premiere of Osias Barroso and Lisa Macuja-Elizalde’s first major choreographic work together. With a production that promises to stay true to the animated feature that generations of young girls and boys loved, this re-telling is perfect for anyone who is on the search for a little bit of extra magic to usher in the holiday season. Show dates for Cinderella at the Aliw Theater are as follows: November 25, 26 and December 3 at 8:00 p.m. and November 27 and December 4 at 3:00 p.m.

Don Quixote
The 21st season will end with one of the world’s most favorite classic ballets, Don Quixote. Watch the iconic characters from the famous novel by Miguel De Cervantes come alive as the lively ballet follows the adventures of the chivalry-obsessed Don Quixote, his faithful servant, Sancho Panzo, and young lovers, Kitri and Basilio. Set in Barcelona, the ballet allows everyone a glimpse of the colorful, vibrant, and inherently romantic Spanish culture. Mikhail Martynyuk, principal danseur of the Kremlin Ballet, once again joins Ballet Manila for this classic. Don Quixote will be shown at the Aliw Theater this February 24 & 25, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. and February 26 at 3:00 p.m.

All shows are at the Aliw Theater in Pasay City.

A little something different

Plain shirts, pants, sneakers, and cap — these are the things I've never imagined myself wearing as of today. I know myself more than anyone else and I know what I like to wear as much as what other people would tell me otherwise. Hence, my style has always been classy and chic or something girly. Before I entered the "blogging world", you'll often see me in dresses, blouses, skirts or shorts. I seldom wear pants unless I really need to. Heels and flats (doll shoes) are the only things that I approved wearing! As long as it's okay to wear heels, I would always wear one but if not and it just have to be casual, I go for the latter one.

I broke them little by little. I started wearing sneakers which I used to hate but love now. I just can't resist the ease and comfort it brings every time I wear them, and as much as I hate to say this, I am buying more sneakers right now rather than heels.  I also started wearing more of pants — high waisted pants even though it's really really hot here in the Philippines. (Thank God somebody brought back that 50's fashion trend!)

But, here's the catch, I rarely wear SHIRTS! And when I say rarely... it's once in a blue moon. It's something that I am really not a fan of. Please don't hate me for saying that! HAHAHA! It was just recently that I actually figured out that I only have TWO shirts in my closet excluding my pambahays and college shirts. The reason why I don't wear shirts it's because I DON'T BUY THEM.... and I don't buy them because I don't wear them. BUT, on my recent purchase from Forever 21, I bought a couple of shirts and one of which is this off-white shirt.

Just to give it a try I wanted something simple but would still stand out. So, I paired the plain shirt with a leather pants that I haven't worn for a long time. I originally planned to wear it with a black sneaker but my Jordan 4 in Breds (which i s the only black sneaker that I have) doesn't look good with it. Thus, I wore it with a black low cut boots and with a leather cap just to conceal my long locks.

So what can you say on this outfit?
Let me know if I pulled it off well or not.

Rainy Daze

During these days of cold weather gets me bewildered by what I feel — instant happiness because I could enjoy myself a hot cup of tea, curled up in bed and let my laziness reign — instant dismay because it's so hard to go out when raining, some plans are getting cancelled or if it pushes through... you've got your self another dilemma which is planning your outfit in this terrible weather. One minute it's raining with cold breeze and the next thing you'll know it's sunny again and the scorching Manila heat gets in the way again.

Hence, my inner "lakawatsera" would always win and no rain would stop me to go out! 😉 Plus it's the only season wherein we can actually wear our favorite jackets, parkas, duster coats, knits, and sweaters that are kept in our closet for a long time.

Last rainy Monday afternoon, I went out to get some errands done. I opted to wear something comfortable so I could easily move and run. (I don't even run. HAHAHA!) Pastel is really in nowadays — thanks to the 2016 Pantone colors: Rose Quartz and Serenity. That's why I decided to wear my Rose Quartz bomber jacket. You might have seen it for a couple of times on my Instagram feed and you're probably one of those who are wondering where did I get this jacket from. Don't worry because I'm about to spill the beans! It's from Stradivarius and it costs Php 1590. I actually waited for months for them to release it here in the Philippines because ummm yes, third world country probs. I wore a white shirt under it just in case that the rain would stop and I couldn't bare the warmth of wearing a jacket. I matched my white top with white denim shorts and white sneakers. I know it's an awful idea to wear white sneakers during rainy days but I don't want to ruin my white and pastel outfit with something dark and I didn't walk under the pouring rain. But if you guys need to commute or literally go out or even just a bit of a chance to walk in a wet road, don't jeopardize your white sneakers. 🙈

What do you think about this look?
Let me know your comments!
I'd love to hear it from you guys. ❤️
